Master plan on national electricity for the period of 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 approved

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 500/QD-TTg approving the National Energy Master Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
The main objectives of the plan are to ensure a sufficient and reliable power supply, diversify energy sources, promote the use of renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy efficiency and conservation. Some of the key features of the plan are:
The share of renewable energy (including hydropower) in the power generation mix is projected to increase from 29% in 2020 to 43% by 2030 and to 60 - 65% by 2050.
The share of coal-fired power plants is expected to decrease from 34% in 2020 to 20% by 2030 and 0% by 2050. No new coal-fired power plants will be planned before 2030.
The share of gas-fired power plants is expected to increase from 15% in 2020 to 37% by 2030, then decrease to 14-15% by 2050. Vietnam plans to develop LNG terminals and gas pipelines to support the generation of power using liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The share of nuclear power is expected to be 0% by 2030 and 4.5 - 6.6% by 2050. Vietnam plans to resume its nuclear power program after 2035.
The share of imported electricity is expected to be 3.4% by 2030 and 1.9 - 2.3% by 2050. Vietnam plans to increase its cross-border power interconnection with neighboring countries.
